Heartstopper: Volume One

“You can't tell whether people are gay by what they look like. And gay or straight aren't the only two options.”

Charlie and Nick are at the same school, but they've never met ... until one day when they're made to sit together. They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn't think he has a chance.

But love works in surprising ways, and Nick is more interested in Charlie than either of them realised.

Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie's lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

Book #1 in The Heartstopper Series!

Alphabet Team Review

This series is absolutely adorable. Book #1 is a graphic novel of two boys on the cusp of romance, perfectly encapsulating the emotions of a first big crush and all the swirling feelings of euphoria and anxiety that come with it. This book is groundwork for the remainder of the series and thus ends in a painful cliff-hanger which made me so glad I had the second one immediately on hand.

The artwork is simple but effective and filled with expression; it perfectly portrays that chaotic beginning feeling, and conversations are often depicted with a facial sketch of the speaker at the end of their speech bubble. It allows the indication of a lot of dialogue into a single frame so nothing is unnecessarily belaboured.

With Charlie, the story focuses around his lack of confidence; with Nick it is a process of working out who he is. I wish this existed when I was a confused teenager and needed reassurance that this is okay, instead of burying it and internalising a lot of shame.
