This Book is Gay

“However you identify, be it lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, asexual, curious, or carrot, we all have something in common—we are a minority, and we have made brave steps to identify as such; we have refused to hide and made a declaration of who we are.”

Lesbian. Bisexual. Queer. Transgender. Straight. Curious. This book is for everyone, regardless of gender or sexual preference. This book is for anyone who's ever dared to wonder. This book is for YOU.

There's a long-running joke that, after "coming out," a lesbian, gay guy, bisexual, or trans person should receive a membership card and instruction manual. THIS IS THAT INSTRUCTION MANUAL. You're welcome.

Inside you'll find the answers to all the questions you ever wanted to ask: from sex to politics, hooking up to stereotypes, coming out and more. This candid, funny, and uncensored exploration of sexuality and what it's like to grow up LGBT also includes real stories from people across the gender and sexual spectrums, not to mention hilarious illustrations.

You will be entertained. You will be informed. But most importantly, you will know that however you identify (or don't) and whomever you love, you are exceptional. You matter. And so does this book.

Alphabet Team Review

When my wife came out she printed a few articles off the internet and handed them to her parents who had no idea what it meant to have a gay child. Talking to my mother-in-law over a decade later, she doesn’t know that it was helpful. The articles went in-depth about different sexual identities and were using terms and acronyms that they didn’t know existed until that evening. It was overwhelming.

This book sets out to be the bridge of understanding in those moments. Whether a parent, a newly out person, or someone with questions, and just needing a way to begin to understand. Does it cover everything? No. Is it going to fit absolutely every situation? Of course not. But does it provide a good starting point? Absolutely it does.

Written by TransWoman Juno Dawson, it is a humorous, honest, and accessible guide to the LGBTQIA+ community that is affirming of queer identities without being alienating to anyone that hasn’t spent a lot of time in the Queer community or in Queer spaces.

It’s a lot to process, but life is a lot to process and books like this one help us start to do just that.

Alphabet Community Review

Review by Lisa

I loved This Book Is Gay for a variety of reasons, but as a parent I loved it the most because I had finally found a book that helped me to make sense of and to navigate the  LGBTQIA+ world my young person was part of. Unflinchingly honest and non-apologetic, this book is a great resource which not only gave me valuable insight and deeper understanding, but which also answered the many questions I had but didn’t feel I could ask.  Accessible, direct and often hilarious, this really is a book with wide appeal which everyone will enjoy and I highly recommend it!
