Bloom

“I would love to have something like that... To be on a team with someone... and to be better together than you ever could be alone.”

Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band—if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.

Alphabet Team Review

This book is very, very sweet! Two men freshly working out where they belong in the world while working side by side in a small-town bakery. It’s complete with 4am starts, recipes and a flour fight.

This is definitely a more character driven story over a plot driven one - not a tonne of drama or conflict, instead it's more focused on Ari coming to terms with what makes him happy, who he is, and his slow-budding relationship with Hector.

Ari has this ‘I want to do something but I don't know what it is’ attitude and believes that leaving home is the answer to that – something that I can heavily relate to. That thing that you can’t be told otherwise, you have to make those mistakes yourself to find out.

Hector knows that it is what he wants to do - he wants to bake. He wants to be a part of a family unit, he wants a partnership that is a team but also knows how to put down boundaries with Ari and his friends, which is very refreshing. Hector is of Sāmoan descent, which we learn the most about through his recipes.

A nice slow-paced comfort read that is beautifully illustrated entirely in a teal hue.
